Dear Visitors,
Would you like to experience “Gold Dust Panning” at the Tohoku History Museum?
We are currently hosting a special exhibition, “The 1300th Anniversary of Tagajo,” which will run through December 15, 2024 (Sunday).
Tagajo was the provincial capital of the Mutsu Province, which included present-day Miyagi Prefecture, during the Nara (710-794) and Heian (794-1185) periods. Mutsu Province produced gold dust for the first time in Japan during the Nara Period, and the provincial governor of Mutsu at the time presented Emperor Shomu with 900 ryo (about 12.6 kg) of gold dust, which was used to decorate the Great Buddha statue at Todaiji Temple.
Experience panning for gold dust yourself, and get a taste of Japanese culture and a tradition closely associated with Tagajo that has continued since ancient times!
