This famed Shinto shrine was the highest-ranking shrine within the Oshu District in ancient times. Construction on the present building began in 1695 by the 4th lord of the Date Domain, Tsunamura Date in 1695 and was completed by the 5th lord, Yoshimura Date in 1704. The shrine building can be reached through the stone torii gate, built in 1663, after passing along the sloped approach and through the 2-story zuijinmon gate. It is a treasured group of buildings constructed on a magnificent scale and laid out in an orderly fashion. Shiogama Shrine also has long swords that are important cultural properties and Shiogama Cherry Trees that are designated national treasures.
Sayugu Hall is through the gate in front, and to the right is an auxiliary shrine. These are the original worship hall and main hall, now used for different purposes. The auxiliary shrine, which was once the main hall, has a round pillar, while Sayugu Hall, which used to be the worship hall, has a square pillar.
These are an ancient type of cherry tree from the Heian period. The big light-pink blossoms that fully bloom at the beginning of May are a splendid sight.
Swords with string-wound hilts dedicated to the shrine by the successive lords are on display in the Shiogama Shrine Museum. Two of them have been designated as important cultural properties.
Shiogama has events throughout the year to mark the seasons, including the Flower Festival and nighttime illumination of cherry blossoms in spring, the Port Festival at Shiogama Port in summer, and moon watching during the long autumn nights in fall. Visitors will enjoy coming back again and again.
